Introduction
The University of Canterbury ACM Student Chapter was formed in 1999. The sponsor is Professor Tad Takaoka of the Computer Science department.
Aims of the Student Chapter
The primary aims of the student chapter are:
- To stimulate interest and knowledge in the science, design and applications of computing,
- To provide a means of communication between persons having an interest in computing, and
- To serve both students enrolled at the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch community.
Activities
- International Collegiate Programming Contest 13 September 2008
- ACM Workshop on Future Technology in Computer Science and Engineering, Feb 5, 2008
- The Next Generation Tour is coming to Canterbury on the 18th of July!
- I am running a competition for a t-shirt slogan.
- We run a Computing '02 in association with the department of Computer Science. The purpose of this club is to teach computer science fundamentals to secondary school children in a collaborative and supportive atmosphere. Michael JasonSmith is the contact for this.
- We have semi-regular meetings. Minutes of previous meetings are available online.
- We have a library of software and books, usually which are given to us by big companies trying to suck up. Talk to the vice-chair to borrow any of these.
- We keep track of other student chapters in New Zealand.
Past Activities
We've now been around long enough to justify a 'past activities' section. If you're interested in reigniting any of these activities, then drop us a line.
- We helped out with Twelfth International Symposium on Algorithms and Computation.
- In association with the department of Computer Science, we organised the New Zealand Computer Science Research Students Conference 2001 (NZCSRSC'01).
- We're ran a Linux Install Fest.
- In 2000 helped run the CCES Programming competition.
- In 2000 we ran the Computer Club. This is an ongoing activity.
- In 2000 we helped out with the end of year BBQ for the Computer Science department.
Membership
Membership of the student chapter is open to any person with an interest in the above aims, although only ACM members who are also students at the University of Canterbury may hold office.
