Abstract for Prof. Peter Eades'
Invited Talk: How to get a PhD in Computer Science
Every research student in Computer Science faces a number of
challenges: how to find a supervisor, which research area to choose,
what research methodology to use, how to give a talk, how to write a
conference paper, and ultimately, how to write a thesis. In this talk
we discuss some generic guidelines for these problems.
Abstract for Prof. Ian
Witten's Invited Talk: The publication business
In order to become successful in research, you need to publish. This
talk introduces the pragmatics of publishing: why, where, how, the
refereeing process, production. Your research reputation -- whether
good or bad -- will depend on the choices you make.
A discussion about what project management is and how you have use
it in every day at university. This experience at teritary
education stands you in good stead for real life and that elusive
'proper job'.
