Agenda
Welcome
- This meeting is slightly unusual as most of the Executive
is either away or have resigned.
- The past year has been a good one for the Chapter, with
members participating in many activities.
- Activities that will benefit members is the main focus for
this year.
Apologies
- Tim Wright (chair) is currently in Boulder, Colorado, and is
unable to make the meeting.
- Our Treasurer and Secretary were unable to make it due to
work commitments.

- Chair and Vice Chair
- These will not be elected as someone has to know what is
going on, but we should vote someone else into these positions
as soon as possible.
Report on the ISAAC (Matt Powell)
- The Chapter helped out running the conference.
- The delegates seemed to appreciate out assistance.
- It was an excellent chance to see how a conference was
run.
- The Acting Chair is to chase up Tad' about payment for the
workers.
Report on Wellington Trip (Michael JasonSmith)
- Tim Wright and Michael JasonSmith went to Victoria
University to meet with the other student chapter heads.
- The ACM paid for travel to and from Wellington for all
participants (except Tim Wright, who had already bludged a
trip from the ACM earlier).
- It was a productive meeting, with many good ideas coming
out.
- The student chapters are not alone in the sense of
isolation.
Trip to Melbourne (Michael JasonSmith)
- Following up the Wellington Trip, all the Australian and New
Zealand Student Chapters will be meeting in Melbourne in
February.
- Canterbury is sending our Treasurer, as the Chair and Vice
Chair are unable to go.
- The main job is for the Treasurer to report back on the
meeting, as the other New Zealand Student chapters know what
we want to say.
Coming Activities
This year the Chapter should carry on the successful activities
of the past year, but try and do more that benefits the
members.
Computer-Science Outreach
- The general public has little knowledge what Compute Science
is, and it is one of the core activities of the ACM
to help rectify this.
- A tour that promotes Computer Science research in New Zealand
is planned for March.
It will go to all the Universities in the countries, and is
partly funded by the ACM.
Matt' Powell and Michael JasonSmith agreed to be part of the
Canterbury delegation on the tour.
- On a smaller level, Tim Bell (COSC Head of
Department) organises trips out to schools.
Tim Wang and Michael JasonSmith agreed to take part.
- The computer club has a small, but eager attendance.
A lot of the ground work has already been done.
Tim Wang, Annabell Church, and Michael JasonSmith will
investigate running it again in 2002.
Fun Stuff
(Not that educating the unwashed hoards about Computer Science
is not fun...)
- Waikato suggested a debate between departments.
Matt' Powell and Tim Wang agreed to be the student delegates
on the Computer Science team.
Any debate should be held in Bentlies, as alcohol can be
served there.
- Annabell Church will be put onto poster duty, putting up any
posters that the chapter has in the Undergraduate labs.
- A
Rent-A-Bat
scheme was proposed.
A number of broken computers will be acquired, and people will
pay the student chapter money to bash the computers.
Running this will be investigated closer to the due dates of
some major items of assessment in COSC.
- A Games Tourney was proposed, with Counterstrike or Unreal
Tournament being played.
- Lecturer Bingo cards could be made up, and distributed.
- The (insane) idea of a ball was proposed, with it being held
in conjunction with a department like Speech and Language
Therapy which also has a massively skewed gender balance.
There is plenty of time to look into this.
Closing
Thanks to those who attended the AGM and volunteered to
participate in this years activities.
Meeting closed 16:39.
