ICTG wins Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) award.
Intelligent Computer Tutoring Group (ICTG) has been recognised by the
Australasian Association for Engineering Education (AAEE) for its research in
the area of artificial intelligence in education. The AAEE Engineering Education
Excellence Award for Programmes that Enhance Excellence in Learning in the
Innovation in Curricula, Learning and Teaching category was given to Tanja
Mitrovic, Brent Martin and Pramudi Suraweera. The announcement was made during
the AAEE’s annual conference, held at the University of Melbourne from 10 to 12
December.

Moffat Mathews wins the International "Write around the World" Competition.
Moffat Mathews has won the International "Write around the World"
Competition run by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
with his paper "Intelligent Learning: The Future of Education". In this
paper, Moffat states the importance of learning, outlines the problems
faced by Education today, and describes Intelligent Tutoring Systems and
their effect on learning. His prize is an all expenses paid trip around
the world to present his paper in three IET member countries of his

Telecom Scholarship Awarded for Voice over IP Security Research
Telecom have awarded a scholarship to Xianglin Deng for her Masters
work on Voice over IP security. This scholarship recognises the
commitment and importance that Telecom place on applied research in
the area of application security in their networks and is a valuable
contribution to the computer security and forensics research group.

MSc student of CSSE participated in the Google Summer of Code 2007
Lee Begg, a member of our Network Research Group, participated in the
Google Summer of Code 2007 (
http://code.google.com/soc/2007/).
He was invited and attended the mentor summit of Summer of Code'2007
at Google's Campus in Mountain View, California, on the 6th
October. Meeting members of other open source organisations was a
highlight, as were discussions and idea sessions. A number of New
Zealanders attended, as well as many people from other
countries. Google sponsored travel for the attendees, and a pizza
party.

Distinctions for two recent PhD graduates of CSSE
Warwick Irwin and Sung Eun Bae, who successfully defended their PhD
theses in June and September this year, have had their theses placed
on the Dean's List (of the best PhD theses of the University of
Canterbury). As it is officially stated: "The University seeks to
honour students whose theses are of the highest quality by entering
their names on the Dean’s List maintained by the Dean of Postgraduate
Studies."

Associate Professor Cockburn Awarded Marsden Grant
Associate Professor Andy Cockburn (Computer Science and Software
Engineering) has been awarded $400,000 over three years to develop and
test new tools to improve navigation within and between computer
documents. It will also deliver theories to allow designers to predict
and explain the efficiency of alternative designs without the need for
time-consuming implementation and evaluation.

Best Paper Award for a PhD student of CSSE
Sayan K. Ray, a PhD student from our Network Research Group, has
received the 2007 IETE-Gowri Memorial Award for his paper on
"Fourth
Generation (4G) Networks: Roadmap- Migration to the Future", published
in IETE Technical Review, Vol 23, No 4, July-August 2006, pp. 253-265.
The IETE (Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers) is
the leading professional society in India, devoted to the advancement of
Science and Technology in Electronics, Telecommunication & IT. The IETE
Technical Review is listed in the ISI (Thomson Scientific) database.

ATNAC 2007 (Australasian Telecommunication Networks and Applications Conference),
a major annual conference bringing together telecommunications
research and development staff from universities and industrial
research laboratories of the region, is organized with the active
involvement of members of our
Network Research Group.
Professor Krys Pawlikowski is chairing its Technical Program
Committee. For the first time since 1992, the conference will be held
outside Australia and is planned in Christchurch, 2-5 December,
2007. The deadline for submission of papers is 27 July, 2007. The Call

G B Battersby Trimble Scholarship in Computer Science recipients announced
Congratulations go out to CSSE students Toby Cox (Honours), Simon Fox
(Honours), Sharon Duan (Masters) and Tobias Bethlehem (Masters), who
have each been awarded the G. B. Battersby Trimble Scholarships in
Computer Science.
This scholarship was started by a generous gift to the university by
the late Dr. G. B. Battersby in 1987 to establish a trust fund "for
the purpose of the advancement of learning in the computer field in
New Zealand". To the income from the trust fund is added an annual
grant from Trimble Navigation N.Z. Ltd. The Trimble grant has been
given in "recognition of the long service provided by the late Dr.
Battersby to the university and to the computing profession".

Honourable Mention and nomination for the best paper at the ACM CHI'07
HCI Lab research has received an Honourable Mention and nomination for
the best paper award at the ACM CHI'07 Conference in San Jose,
California (www.chi2007.org).
The paper "Shallow Depth 3D Interaction: Design and Evaluation of
One-, Two-, and Three-Touch Techniques" is accessible as
PDF
and a
video clip.

Canterbury Computer Science student wins best paper award
Moffat Mathews, a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science
and Software Engineering, won the award for Best Presentation at the
recent Fifth NZ Computer Science Research Student Conference in
Hamilton.
The conference was held on the Waikato University marae, and was
attended by post-graduate Computer Science students from all over New
Zealand. Ten students from Canterbury University attended the
conference.

It is hoped that the conference will be held at Canterbury next year.

Two New Technology NZ scholarships have been awarded to CSSE Students
for work in the Computer Security area.
Two new Technology NZ scholarships have been awarded by the Foundation
for Science Research and Technology for research work with Allied
Telesis. In both cases these will lead to Masters Degrees.
Delio Brignoli's research project is
"Realtime Identification and Prevention of Network Attacks"
Andrew McKenzie's project is
"Achieving, Detecting and Preventing NAT Traversal for Peer-to-Peer Networks"
