The University of Canterbury's Computer Science department has enrolled the 1000th student in its introductory computing course, COSC 110.
The number of enrolments for the course is a record for any department at the university.
"Demand for the course has grown steadily since limitation of entry was removed last year," says head of department Tim Bell.
Careful planning and technological aids help to stop students being lost in the crowd.
This includes two hours a week in lab sessions, which have one tutor for each 12 students.
The Web and e-mail are heavily used for student notices, teaching material, and for posting results. A video link allows up to 600 students to attend each lecture.
Next year, the department is considering evening lectures as well, so that people with day-time commitments can attend.
