Taking and Analysing Geological Samples

This is the entry-level method of prospecting. First you will need to make a Prospecting Pick. To take a sample, right-click on any piece of Stone or Gravel with the Prospecting Pick. A Geological Sample item will be dropped.

Geological Sample

Litmus Paper

To analyse the sample, you will need a Geological Sample Analysis Kit and a supply of Litmus Paper. To use the kit, place it down somewhere and right-click it to open its GUI. Place the sample you want to analyse in the sample slot and some litmus paper in the slot beside it. Analysis will begin automatically and should finish in a few seconds, after which a report will appear below.

Geological Sample Analysis Kit

The report shows the place where the sample was taken and the amounts of any interesting mineral traces it contains. You can expect indications of ores within 16 blocks of the sample location, horizontally and vertically, to show up. Ores closer to the sample location will show up more strongly than ones further away.

To save the analysis report for future reference, place a Writeable Book in the book slot and press the + button.

If you lose the report, you can analyse the sample again to get it back. However, a little of the sample is used up each time you analyse it, and a given sample can only be analysed 16 times before there is nothing left.

Performing a Geological Survey

This is an advanced mineral exploration technique for professional miners. The Geological Surveyor machine uses a controlled explosion to send seismic waves into the ground, and by analysing the echoes that come back, builds a map of underground ore densities.

Geological Surveyor
Geophone

As well as the Geological Surveyor itself, you will also need the following:

1. At least 3 Geophones placed in a suitable arrangement around the Geological Surveyor. The geophones must be within 16 blocks of the Surveyor, but no closer than 8 blocks to the Surveyor or to each other.

2. Supplies of Paper, Ink and Gunpowder in the appropriate slots of the Surveyor.

3. A Button or other means of supplying a redstone signal to the Surveyor.

The Surveyor can operate in either monochrome or colour mode, selected using the button beside the ink slots. Colour mode provides more information about types of ores, but is more expensive. Monochrome mode requires only black ink, whereas colour mode requires all four colours of ink.

When all the necessary conditions are satisfied, the Surveyor wil show "Ready" in the GUI, and a single green light on the outside of the machine.

The Surveyor is trigged by a redstone pulse. The easiest way to deliver this is to put a button on the side of the machine.

Be prepared for a loud noise. Do not be alarmed; the explosion is well contained and should not cause any damage.

Analysing the results and printing the map will take several seconds, during which time the machine will show a flashing green light. When finished, two steady green lights will appear. The map can then be collected from the output slot of the GUI.

A red light indicates an error condition; open the GUI to find out more information.
