ICTG at the 2015 International Conference on Computers in Education

ICTG at the 2015 International Conference on Computers in Education2015-12-07.

Tanja Mitrovic, Moffat Mathews, and Xingliang (Enos) Chen presented research papers at the 23rd International Conference on Computers in Education (ICCE 2015) which was held in Hangzhou, China from 30 November to 4 December 2015. The ICCE is an annual meta conference held by the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education and is the largest conference to do with technology enhanced learning and teaching in the Asia-Pacific area. UCCSSE Department hosts CS4HS 2015

UCCSSE Department hosts CS4HS 20152015-12-04.

The department recently hosted its 5th annual CS4HS, a Google-sponsored event for helping high school teachers to teach Computer Science. This year 150 teachers attended, and the event was run by about a dozen volunteers. About half of the teachers attending were here for the first time. The event included workshops learning how to teach the NCEA computer science and programming standards, stories from students and industry, bus trips to visit industry, and a lot of opportunities for teachers to meet colleagues and exchange ideas. UCCSSE now offers the new Master of Engineering (ME) in Software Engineering

From January 2016, the department will be offering a new post-graduate qualification in Software Engineering. The Master of Engineering (ME) in Software Engineering is an endorsed research degree and includes optional coursework and a thesis. The qualification aims to provide a research focused learning environment in which students can develop their independent problem solving skills through supervised research. Study for the degree will normally be full-time, but the Dean may approve part-time enrolment. The ME requires 16 months to three years full-time or 30 months to four years part-time. Austen Rainer takes up role as Head of Department

On December 1st Associate Professor Austen Rainer will take over as the head of the CSSE department. Austen joined our department this year and has assumed the role of the director of studies for software engineering, which is also his field of research and teaching. We wish him all the best for his new role.

Tanja Mitrovic completes six years as HoD

Tanja Mitrovic completes six years as HoD2015-11-30.

Monday November 30th marks the last day for Professor Tanja Mitrovic as the head of the CSSE department. Tanja has filled this role for six years and has led the department through challenging times. She has been a very strong advocate for the department and has shown outstanding and tireless leadership. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks for her service. Her shoes are big ones to fill.  

PhD Graduate Wins John Makepeace Bennett Award

PhD Graduate Wins John Makepeace Bennett Award2015-11-24.

Recent PhD graduate Joey Scarr has just won the 2016 John Makepeace Bennett award for the Australasian Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation. The award will be presented to him in Canberra in February. Programming Challenge for Girls (PC4G 2015) held at UCCSSE

Programming Challenge for Girls (PC4G 2015) held at UCCSSE2015-11-20.

Programming Challenge for Girls, better known as PC4G, was recently held in the department. We had nine female Computer Science and Software Engineering students teach the programming language Alice to 39 Year Ten high school students, then had them complete three programs in Alice: two were set, but the other was a free-for-all. We then rounded off the day with a speech and a prizegiving. The high school students not only learnt how to code in Alice, but also the possibilities that coding brings. Read More >>

Caitlin Duncan and Tim Bell have won the Best Paper Award at the Workshop in Primary and Secondary Computing Education 2015 (WIPSCE 2015) in London, England. Congratulations to Caitlin and Tim!

Visit to Malaysian School

As part of an ongoing collaboration to develop computer science education with Kolej Yayasan Saad school in Malacca, Malaysia, Caitlin Duncan and Yalini Sundralingam visted the school in November 2015 to plan a new curriculum that reflects the latest research on Computational Thinking.

Successful PhD Defense

Davide Floriello has successfully passed his oral PhD exam today, defending his PhD thesis on "Statistical Methods for Correspondence Problems with Branched Structures". Davide will be awarded his degree after completing some amendments to the thesis. Congratulations Davide!

Tim Bell was a keynote speaker recently at both the ISSEP 2015 conference (in Ljubljana, Slovenia) for CS education researchers from around Europe, at the INFOS 2015 conference (in Darmstadt, Germany) for Computer Science teachers and researchers from Germany, and at a Computer Science Education workshop (in Poznan, Poland), which was held at 10:10am on 10/10.
