UCCSSE keeps leading the CS in schools initiative with workshop for primary school teachers
Just before the start of the 2016 school year, 29 primary school teachers attended a workshop on teaching computer science in primary schools in the CSSE department, organised by Tracy Henderson, with Caitlin Duncan, Tim Bell, and several senior students helping. This is part of a pilot study that is entering its third year, where local teachers are trialling ideas for teaching topics based on local adaptations of new curricula from overseas. In the workshop teachers from the 2014 and 2015 pilots combined their experiences and ideas, and on the second day of the workshop they shared them with teachers who are joining the pilot for 2016.
The response to the pilot has been very positive, and teachers are reporting that their students are finding the material engaging, and it is helping to teach other curriculum areas including numeracy and literacy.
A followup workshop is planned for mid-year. Contact: Tim Bell (firstname.lastname@example.org)
