Seminar

Haptic human-computer interaction.

Speaker: Professor Stephen Brewster.

Institute: Computer Science; University of Glasgow.

Time/Place: 10:00 AM, Wed, 2 April, in Room 031, Erskine Building.

Abstract

In this seminar I will talk about the use of haptics and the sense of touch in user interfaces. Until recently touch has been little used in interaction, even though it is a powerful sense in our everyday lives. Technology is now available to allow touch to be used, but what should it be used for?

I will define some of the terms used in the area of haptics research and then describe the devices currently available. I will then give some examples of the research we have been doing in this area. I will focus on visualisation for blind people, haptic medical training and haptic desktop widgets.
