Computer Science and the University of the 21st Century:
New Media, Mindsets, Cultures, and Learning Organizations.
Speaker: Prof. Gerhard Fischer.

Abstract
Universities have not changed too much in the last few centuries - why should they change now? In this talk I will argue that universities are under intense pressure to serve the needs of the knowledge society of the future by reinventing learning, teaching, and collaborating. Computer Science has the potential to make major contributions to the university of the future by creating new media that need to co-evolve with new mindsets and new cultures in designing the learning organizations of the future.
Biography
Gerhard Fischer (http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~gerhard/) is a visiting faculty member in the Computer Science Department of Canterbury University, Christchurch, during the academic year 2002/2003. He is a professor of Computer Science, a fellow of the Institute of Cognitive Science, and the director of the Center for LifeLong Learning & Design (L3D) at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Current research interests include new media supporting lifelong learning, human-human and human-computer collaboration, (software) design, knowledge management, domain-oriented design environments, and universal design (assistive technologies).
