Abstract
In the wireless arena a new paradigm is going to play an important role, the one of infractureless communication networks, that people refer to as "ad hoc networks". In contrast to traditional wireline and wireless networks, an ad hoc network is expected to operate in a networks environment in which all nodes are mobile and run both hosts and routers functionality.
The very nature of ad hoc networks pose many new challenges, due to unique features like dynamic network topology, fluctuating link capacity, need for self-organization, energy-conserving requirements. Also, the traditional approach to solve problems through protocols and algorithms referring to specific layers (ranging from the physical to the application layer) has to be reversed into a cross-layer perspective.
The seminar attempts to provide a comprehensive overview of the new challenges that are raised by ad hoc networks and deserve more research efforts in the near future.
