Abstract
We consider a single server queue with a number of customer classes. In addition to arrival rates and service distributions, classes differ with a priority parameter. Upon service completion, the next to commence service is selected from a given class with a probability which is proportional to this class population size and to its priority parameter. In the case of a memoryless queue, we determine the expected queuing time for customers belonging to various classes. Some extensions to general service distributions and variants of the queue discipline are looked at. We then look into a number of related models where decision making from the customers side is involved. Among them, (1) how much to pay in order to get a suitable priority parameter, or (2) in the case where only two priority parameters exist and the higher one comes with some charge, should one pay that or not, and finally (3) should a customer of a given class join the queue or not.
