A Chinese Speech Quality Assessment System.

Speaker: Fong L. Chong, Masters Student.

Time/Place: 10:00 AM, Wed, 29 Oct, in Room 031, Erskine Building.

Abstract

Existing limitations of transmission bandwidth and storage of data belong to probably the most critical issues in any modern telecommunications network, including the Internet. In the case of voice transmission, these limitations are being commonly relaxed by reduction of acoustic information and by appropriate speech coding which results in probable loss of information.

The loss of information potentially leads to degradation of speech quality and can affect speech intelligibility at the destination site. Subjective and objective tests were developed to assess influence of typical transformations of speech on intelligibility and quality of transmitted/processed voice signals. Subjective tests are usually time consuming and expensive. To solve this problem various objective tests have been developed. Currently, the most accurate objective test uses a psycho-acoustic model that mimics the human perception of speech. This test has been found to be highly accurate in the case of English speech. However, spoken Chinese has very different linguistic features from English and hence systems that work well for English might not be so good for Chinese. This Masters research project is aimed at studying the validity of this claim and if results are positive, a test system that works well for Chinese speech will be developed.
