Abstract

Computer science in general, and software engineering in particular, occupy the space between the disciplines from which they were derived: mathematics, physical sciences, engineering and psychology. The roles and natures of empirical work in these disciplines are subject to different constraints and cultures. Nevertheless, experimental and empirical work is a vital part of our subject. In this seminar, I will highlight some of the issues arising in empirical software engineering. Examples will be drawn from projects in the Software Engineering & Visualisation research group.
