SQL Standard and Its Implementations: Similarities and Pitfalls

Abstract

This talk is about the differences and similarities between the SQL standard on one side and the different implementations of it (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server ,...) We use the SQL/OLAP specification of the standard to show that it is possible to have portable SQL solutions for all database systems. On the other hand, we use as an example the implementation of type hierarchies in Oracle to show differences between the specification of the standard and the one of its implementations. The consequences of the differences will be shown, too.
