Abstract

Based on my PhD thesis, this presentation will describe and discuss the development process and the evaluation of a stakeout application for wearable outdoor augmented reality (WOAR). Augmented reality allows users to perceive virtual objects as part of their real environment. Using wearable computers as a platform for Augmented Reality (AR) allows users to see the real and the virtual world combined in a mobile environment. The thesis uses road staekout as a case study to examine usability problems of a WOAR application in detail, proposes solutions, and compares their efficiency in formal user studies. Furthermore, the objective performance of the developed WOAR application is formally compared to the performance of a commercial non-AR implementation, showing that the AR solution can compete with the traditional system for certain applications.
