Seminar

Death to Makefiles (Please).

Speaker: Dr. Peter Smith.

Time/Place: 3:10 pm, Friday, 14th August, in Room 031, Erskine Building.

All are welcome.

Abstract

The Make build tool has been the defacto standard in the software industry since the late 1970s. By far the majority of software projects, particularly in C or C++, use some type of make-based build framework. In this presentation, we discuss some of make's major limitations, and will examine how modern build tools (such as Ant and SCons) avoid these common pitfalls. The end goal is to reduce the overall cost of developing software.

Biography

Dr Peter Smith, formerly a student at Canterbury, has worked in the software development industry for the last 10 years. He has gained a significant amount of experience in managing large software build systems, and has seen several million dollars wasted due to inefficiencies.
