Future Virtualized Networks:
Using Concurrent Multipath Transmission for Transport Virtualization.

Abstract
The concept of Transport Virtualization enhances the capabilities of future networks. Transport Virtualization enables transport mechanisms with arbitrary resource usage independent of the underlying transport system. The simplest form of Transport Virtualization can be achieved by collecting multiple transport resources (even from different virtual networks or providers) and selecting the best resources for exclusive or concurrent use. However, the selection and application of concurrent paths is complex and its impact on the transmission is non-intuitive. Path length diversity of different concurrent paths inevitably introduces out-of- order packet delivery. We present and discuss a mathematical model for the analysis of the fundamental behavior and influence factors for packet re- ordering in concurrent multipath transmissions. Our model facilitates the understanding of path selection algorithms for multipath transport virtualization.
Biography
Prof. Dr. Kurt Tutschku holds the Chair of “Future Communication” (endowed by Telekom Austria) at the University of Vienna. Before that, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Distributed Systems, University of Wuerzburg. He led the department's group on Future Network Architectures and Network Management until December 2007. From Feb. 2008 to July 2008, he worked as an Expert Researcher at the NICT (National Institute for Information and Communication Technology, Japan). Kurt Tutschku has received a diploma and doctoral degree in Computer Science from University of Wuerzburg in 1994 and 1999 respectively and completed his Habilitation ("`State Doctoral Degree"') at the University of Wuerzburg in 2008. His main research interest include future generation communication networks, Quality-of-Experience, and the modeling and performance evaluation of future network control mechanisms and services in the emerging Future Internet, particular of P2P overlay networks.
