Abstract

This seminar will be a game of two halves: the first half will summarise my PhD research into understanding and improving electronic document navigation; the second will overview my present research that primarily focuses on mobile device interactions.

Document navigation is one of the most commonly performed desktop activities, yet researchers have little idea of how users currently navigate and what tools they employ. This seminar will present our work into first understanding these activities (through logging and field observations) and secondly suggesting improvements to the currently available suite of tools.

Intermission will provide a flying introduction to the city of Bristol.

The second half will cover my recent work into areas such as gesture-based text input, the social acceptability of gestures, mobile phone projection and conversations around electronic tabletops. My current work into mobile haptics will also be introduced.

This seminar will appeal to people of various dispositions, especially those who are Computer Science staff and postgraduate students.
