Abstract
In December 2009 we headed down to Port Chalmers to find out how container terminals operate and (hopefully) avoid being squished by large machinery. Thus began a project developing an agent-based system that can emulate the port and optimise its operation, in collaboration with NZi3 and Jade Software Corporation. The project has since expanded to include participants from Otago University and the University of Duisberg-Essen and now encompasses agent-based systems, neighbourhood search and evolutionary algorithms. We present our work to date and reflect on our collaboration with Jade.
