Abstract

According to the most recent Computing Research Association Taulbee survey (of North American univerities), only 13.5% of CS degrees were awarded to women by the surveyed univerities in 2010. In this presentation I will take a look at the "problem" of underrepresntation of women in computer science in the US, and specifically at the University of California at Santa Cruz. I will discuss what we at UCSC are doing to try and draw more women into CS and some of the research literature around this topic.

Biography

Charlie McDowell received the B.S. degree in computer science and applied mathematics from California Polytechnic State University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of California at San Diego. In 1985 he joined the faculty at the University of California at Santa Cruz where he is currently a professor in the Computer Science Department and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs in the Baskin School of Engineering.

His current research interests are in computer science education and the gender gap in computer science, and literate programming. He has also published numerous articles on high performance computing, particularly debugging parallel programs, Java for embedded systems, and computer Go. He is co-author of "Java by Dissection", a programming language text book.
