Abstract

Much of the relevant literature claims that attractive and interactive simulations offer many benefits for both teachers and learners. The benefits such as inducing learners to learn by doing and involving learners in the learning processes by exploring, manipulating or experimenting with a relevant model will help learners to construct mental models and improve their understanding of a given task. However, how to help teachers to construct simulation models, how to provide a learning environment that allows learners to conduct various experiments through interactive graphical user interfaces and observe the impact of changes to model behaviour through a range of engaging visualizations, how to store model states, etc. remain challenging questions. This research designed and developed easy-to-use Discrete Event Simulation (DES) tools for learning and teaching purposes to help answer these questions. Through experiments, both model developers and users showed positive feedback of the tools.
