Michael Pearce

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science
Postgraduate Diploma in Science in Computer Security and Forensics

"I have an intense desire to understand the devices and technologies that I encounter every day, and this includes their weaknesses. It is very easy to understand how something should work, and yet not realise how it really functions."

Given these interests, Michael has completed qualifications in both Computer Science and Computer Security and Forensics at UC. His studies have focussed on computer technologies and the related issue of information security.

"This area of focus includes looking at existing issues, attempting to find new areas of concern and preventing attackers from exploiting computer systems for their own ends. I really enjoy the idea of helping people while at the same time thinking analytically, rationally and a little bit deviously."

While obtaining detailed technical knowledge in computer and networking systems, Michael has also enjoyed the broad range of related social, legal and governmental issues that have been covered in his coursework.

"I enjoyed studying in a cutting-edge field with a fast knowledge turnover. Often informal channels are the best sources of information. By the time some security information makes it into a textbook, it's already obsolete."

Michael hopes to continue his studies by undertaking a PhD in the United States, eventually working in the private industry or government to protect their operations from the threats facing computer and systems securities.
