Tutoring in 2013 - Call for Applications

Applications are invited for tutor positions in the Department of Computer Science for the teaching year 2013.

Tutors' duties include such activities as preparing for and conducting tutorials and/or laboratories, keeping records of students' attendance, and attending meetings as required by the Course Supervisor. Depending on the course, and the availability of funding, help may also be required with marking of assessment.

Qualities required for the job include sufficient knowledge of the course material, enthusiasm for tutoring and the course, and an ability to get along with a wide variety of people. Assistance and training are available to all tutors.

Please note the following points:

  • Tutors are appointed after consultation with relevant staff members and consideration of the overall needs of the department.
  • Generally we require tutors to do at least 2 labs/tutorials a week, which means a minimum commitment of 5 or 6 hours a week, depending on the preparation time needed.
  • Preference is usually given to more senior students, but we occasionally employ a few 300 level students and some tutors from outside the University.
  • Please do not rely on tutoring for financial support. We cannot guarantee tutoring for anyone, as this can depend on many factors, such as student numbers, returning tutors, etc. Also, often we cannot make final decisions on tutor allocation until quite near the start of a course and/or semester. Tutorial/lab streams may also be cancelled or rearranged, as student numbers change through the course of the semester.
  • There is no guarantee that first semester Cosc121 tutors will be tutoring Cosc122, as fewer tutors have generally been needed for Cosc122.
  • Tutors are required to attend an orientation training session at the start of the year, and will be given a contract with the department.

The rate of pay in 2013 will be in the range $16.00 to $21.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Holiday pay at 8% is paid in addition to the hourly rate.
