Accessing CSSE Linux from ICTS Windows

An X-server application for Linux called "Cygwin" is available on all ICTS Windows computers. Students with CSSE Linux accounts can use "Cygwin" to gain X-windows access to CSSE Linux systems. The relatively small screen size of ICTS Windows computers means that it is usually preferable to run X-windows on CSSE workstations, but "Cygwin" is expected to be most useful in periods when CSSE workstations are heavily utilised, and/or for people with ready access to ICTS Windows computers (such as those in some University Halls).

To use "Cygwin":

  • Log into ICTS Windows using your ICTS usercode.
  • Starting "Cygwin":
Click on the "Start" button in the bottom left corner, move the mouse over the "All Programs >" menu, then select the "Cygwin >" menu item, and finally click the "CSSE X on Linux" option (and not "CSSE Xterm Linux").
  • "Cygwin" starts up and a standard CSSE Linux login window appears. Login to your CSSE account as usual and you are away. The standard set of programs (Firefox, xemacs, etc.) can be started. The window sizes and positions may be different because of the smaller screen size.

The ICTS Windows computers have two-button mice. The left Windows mouse button acts as the left X-windows mouse button. The right Windows mouse button acts as the right X-windows mouse button. To emulate the middle X-windows mouse button, press both Windows mouse buttons simultaneously.

  • When you have finished your CSSE Linux session, log out as usual. To close down "Cygwin", click on the "X" button located in the top right hand corner of the "Cygwin" window frame.
  • To log out of Windows, click on "Start" in the bottom left hand corner, then select "Log Off" or "Shutdown" from the menu, and confirm your choice in the dialogue box.

At this stage it is not possible to print from CSSE Linux systems to printers in the ICTS Windows workrooms.
