Summary of transcoding research now available - book chapter

Hello,

A new summary of research in the transcoding field is now available,
entitled "Transcoding of the Internet's Multimedia Content for Universal
Access," chapter 15, in the book "Multimedia Communications: Directions
&
Innovations," edited by Jerry D. Gibson, Academic Press, 2001.
Transcoding
is the term being used to describe adaptation of content (e.g. Web,
multimedia) to heterogeneous communication links (slow modem, wireless
links, etc.) and heterogeneous access devices (small-screen PDA's, cell
phones, laptops, etc.). In addition to summarizing recent research in
Web-based and video transcoding, we include a comparison of the
pluses/minuses of end-to-end vs. proxy-based architectural approaches to
transcoding.
