meeting of our Research Group on Networks: Carl Cook will talk on "Current directions in Active Networks"

This week's meeting will be in room COSC 315, on Friday at 11.00 am.
The main item of the agenda is a talk by Carl Cook, a new Master student
of COSC.
Carl will talk on "Current directions in Active Networks".

Abstract:
===========================================================================
Whilst some end-to-end services such as HTTP can be provided within the
existing IP-based network infrastructure, the current surge in demand
for
network-level functionality (as reflected by IETF activities on
IntServ/RSVP, DiffServ and IPv6) provides evidence that the current "one
size fits all" model of IP may no longer be suitable for todays
networks.
Active networks provide networked applications and users with a
programmable
interface that supports the dynamic modification of a networks
behaviour,
thus bypassing both the standards committee and the hardware vendor in
order
to address the current anomaly between the rate at which user demands
change
and the pace at which new services can be deployed.

In this week's seminar, an overview of current active network
architectures
will be presented. This will be followed by a closer look at the key
issues
of security, safety and efficiency. Additionally, the draft active
network
protocols and interfaces will also be discussed. Finally, an outline of
the
future directions in active network research will be given.
