"Improving TCP Performance in Wired-Wireless Environments "

Gustavo Da Costa
M.E. student in Electrical Engineering
University of Canterbury

Friday 23 February 2001
11.00 am
Room A301 (Tutorial Room), EEE Building

While TCP can perform well in the conventional (wired) Internet, the
fundamental assumptions under which TCP was developed cause dramatic
performance degradation when a connection goes through a wireless link, due
to the higher wireless link BER and user mobility. The increasing demand
for "Anytime-anywhere" Internet access and the widespread use of TCP as the
reliable transport protocol in the Internet creates the need for
modifications to TCP so that its performance is not severely penalised by a
wireless link, while still providing adequate performance on wired links.

This seminar will present an overview of the sources of TCP performance
degradation in wireless environments, as well as the main considerations
that should be observed when attempting to modify the protocol. Different
approaches used for performance improvements, their strengths and drawbacks
will then be briefly discussed. A summary of recommended approaches for TCP
performance improvement in different situations will then be given.
