      ************************************************************

The 8th IEEE/IFIP Network Operations and Management Symposium (NOMS
2002)
will be held on April 15-19 2002 in Florence, Italy. The symposium is
sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society's Technical Committee on
Network Operations and Management (CNOM), with technical co-sponsorship
from
the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working
Group
6.6 on Network Management.

NOMS and the IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network
Management (IM) are the premier technical conferences in the area of
network
and systems management and operations. Held in the even-numbered years
since
1988, NOMS 2002 will continue the well-established tradition of NOMS and
IM
as the primary forum for technical exchanges for the research,
standards,
development, systems integrator, service providers, and user
communities.

Following this symposium's theme "Management Solutions for the New
Communications World", NOMS 2002 will present the latest approaches and
technical solutions in the area of network operations and management. An
exciting, peer-reviewed program of technical sessions, tutorials, and
vendor
exhibits will address the ever-increasing interest in overall management
solutions for all types of communications and computing networks,
systems,
services and enterprise applications.

Authors are invited to submit technical papers, as well as proposals for
tutorials, panel discussions, poster presentations, and
birds-of-a-feather
sessions (informal discussion groups) in the following suggested topic
areas:

Management Frameworks and Architectures
* Emerging Technologies and Frameworks for Management Systems
(Web, XML, DEN, Agents, etc.)
* "Plug-n-Play" Components-Based Network Management Architectures
* B2B Solutions for SP-to-SP OSS Interconnection
* Distributed Management and Scalability Issues
* Merging of Control and Management Planes
* Frameworks for Scalable, QoS-aware and Configurable Services

Management Paradigms, Models and Solutions
* Quality of Service Management
* Network and Systems Monitoring
* Intelligent Alarm Correlation, Filtering, and Trouble Shooting
* Active and Programmable Networks
* Mobile and Intelligent Agents

Topics Related to Operational Challenges:
* Changing Business Requirements on Service and Network Management
* Dynamic Service Requirements and Network Management
* Knowledge-Based Proactive Customer Care and Workforce Management
* Process Engineering for Operators' Service and Network Management
* ASP Approach to Third Party Network Management Solutions
* Integration and Testing of Commercial off-the-Shelf Products

Beyond
* IP Networks and Services, Telephony over Packet, Transition from IPv4
to
IPv6
* Ad-Hoc Networks and Networks Supporting Pervasive Computing
* "Soft" Networks (Soft-Switch, MSF, Parlay, OSA, etc.) and Level 4
Switching
* Content Delivery Networks

Service Management:
* Transaction-Oriented Services
* E-Commerce, M-commerce, Supply Chain Management
* Management Aspects of Service Pricing and Accounting
* Service Level Agreements and Bandwidth Trading

Other topics relevant to management are also welcome. We particularly
encourage papers from industry on case studies and experiences that
emphasize lessons learned.

Technical Papers and Posters
Papers are to be written in English. Submissions for the paper sessions
must
include full, unpublished papers, which are not under review in any
other
conference or journal. They should not exceed 12 single-spaced pages.
Submissions for the poster program should contain an extended abstract
of
3-5 pages. All submissions will be carefully reviewed by at least three
experts and returned to the author(s) with comments to ensure high
quality.
The final papers and poster descriptions will be included in the widely
distributed, hardbound Symposium Proceedings published by IEEE.

ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION IS REQUIRED. Authors are requested to submit
papers
and poster contributions in PDF or Postscript format via the Web.
Submission
instructions, which can be found at www.noms.org/2002/submission.html.
