WOSP 2002 :3rd International Workshop on Software and Performance

              Rome, Italy , 23-26 July 2002
               http://univaq.it/~wosp02

Sponsors: ACM SIGSoft and ACM SIGMetrics
In-cooperation (being arranged) IEEE TC on Software Engineering
		        	  IFIP WG 6.3 and 7.3

                   Call for Papers

WOSP provides a forum for the growing community of researchers
interested in performance analysis of software systems, at any stage of
software development, from requirements to software architectures, to
design and code. Performance analysis is intended in the very
broad sense of analysing non functional quantitative aspects of
software systems.

Research on software and performance aims to build-in predictable
performance during software design, to track performance issues through
the development and deployment of a system, and to understand the
sources of performance failure.

Modern distributed applications, like Internet-centric or Web-centric
applications, add new unforeseen challenges. They generally consists of
multiple (fixed or mobile) nodes, distributed over a wide area,
belonging to
different administrative domains, and with non-homogeneous and
intermittent connections. The complexity of the design of such
applications makes even more stringent the need of methodologies and
tools that help the software designer in evaluating the impact on the
application quality of different alternatives, already in the early
phases of software design.

WOSP 2002 intends to focus, but is not limited to, methods, measures
and tools for performance of communication software.
This includes standard wired communication, mobile communication,
internet-based communication, heterogeneous networks, communication
and interaction paradigms, software architecture, middleware
applications,
etc.

The workshop aims to bring together software engineers, developers,
performance analysts and modellers. The previous WOSP events were held
in
Santa Fe, NM, (WOSP'98) and in Ottawa, CA, (WOSP'00).

                      Topics

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

    * Performance measurement, modeling and management for software
systems, including essentially all kinds of analysis, prediction and
testing, from requirements to software architecture to design to
    implementation
    *Model evaluation techniques
*Performance attributes of software architecture and patterns
*Performance driven software design methods: methods and
techniques for automatic generation of performance models and
their integration in existing case tools and environments
*Tools and techniques, including modeling tools and software
    description tools with performance aspects
*Software performance engineering process and practice
*QoS performance modelling, including measures, methods and
models that integrate performance and QoS aspects of software
    systems.

Full papers, experience papers, position papers, and panels are
solicited.
Full papers and experience papers will be fully refereed for
presentation in
the Proceedings which will be published by ACM. Position papers will be
used to make up workshop sessions, and selected ones will be included in
the proceedings.

                Submission Instructions

Panel submissions should go to the one of the Program Chair. For all
other
papers, authors are invited to submit full papers (up to 16 pages),
experience papers (up to 8 pages) and position papers (up to 3 pages)
electronically in PostScript or PDF using a two phase online submission
process. First, registration of the paper and an abstract of no more
than
250 words must be complete before 15 January 2002. After successfully
completing this, you will receive instructions to submit your paper, due
no
later than 22 January 2002.

Submissions should explicitly state their contribution and their
relevance
to the theme of the conference. Full papers are expected to describe new
research results and actual advances of the state of the art. Experience
papers should describe a performance problem, or methods to address
such problems, including methods for software specification, design or
performance analysis. We seek industrial experiences of all kinds.
Position papers may be any kind of brief communication which would
contribute to discussion of an issue in the field.

Simultaneous or similar submissions to other conferences or journals are
not allowed.

                 Conference Location

The conference will be held in Rome, Residence Ripetta, via di Ripetta
231
