CFP: Special Issue of Computer Networks]

CALL FOR PAPERS

Journal of Computer Networks (Elsevier)

Special Issue on: Home Area Networking

Guest Editors: Marie-Jose Montpetit and David Starobinski

Submission deadline: 1 March 2002
Notification to authors: 1 July 2002
Target publication date: December 2002

Home Area Networks (HANs) represent a new application of technology
aimed
at supporting communication between heterogeneous devices in the home.
The
networked devices cover the range from the well-known PCs, laptops but
also mobile computing devices, advanced set-top-boxes, Internet
appliances
and home sensors.

The goal of HANs is to leverage the individual capabilities of these
devices by integrating them into a larger, more powerful network. This
integration will lead to a paradigm shift in the way people use and
manage
the electronic and computing devices at home and use content and
communications to enhance their living experience.

The HAN requires the same capabilities as any other network: forward
information to the right destination, protect itself from accidental or
malicious attacks, and provide adequate resources to devices especially
when delivering multimedia contents. However, the scale of the HAN is
usually much smaller than usual networks and combines fixed, mobile, and
nomadic devices with limited resources. Further, HANs are becoming more
and more complex and have more and more devices communicating via
heterogeneous means - both wired and wireless. Therefore, it becomes
imperative to establish how HANs will remain manageable and efficient in
the future.

The purpose of this special issue is to provide novel perspectives on
the
evolution of HANs from the current network, and the challenges that need
to be addressed towards their successful deployment.

This special issue intends to cover topics related to the architecture,
design, modeling, performance, measurements, and experimentation of home
networks technologies and IP-enabled devices. We are seeking both
research and review papers that are original, unpublished, and not
currently under review by any conferences or journals. Care will be
given
to include high quality papers that will enable greater dissemination of
academic research in this emerging field. Specific areas of interest
include but are not limited to:

-HAN architecture
-HAN technology including IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, powerline and HPNA
-Quality of Service and resource management
-Scalability
-Clustering and routing
-Data synchronization and dissemination
-Resource discovery and self-configuration
-Security and privacy
-Intelligent home agents
-Indoor Geolocation
-Design of lightweight protocols for Internet-enabled devices
-Implementation and performance

Manuscripts should be limited to 20 double-spaced pages and sent
electronically in PDF format (before 1 March 2002) to one of the Guest
Editors:
