a seminar talk by a visitor from Germany (change of the location !)

Hi:

Krishna Pandit, a visitor to our COSC/ECE Network
Research Group will give a seminar talk tomorrow,
Thursday, January 16, at 11.00; in room MSCS 015.

Krishna is a PhD student at the Multimedia Communications
Lab, headed by Prof. R. Steinmetz, at Darmstadt University
of Technology, Germany. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. degree
(equivalent to a M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering from
the same university. His research interests are
Internet Quality of Service (QoS), QoS in wireless
networks, Statistical QoS and traffic modeling.

Title:

Scalable Internet Quality of Service by Applying
Probability Theory
-----------------------------------------------------
Abstract:

Quality of Service in the Internet has been
a research topic for many years. Many proposals have
been made but none of them deployed in large scale. A
balance between complexity in the core network, which
prohibits scalability, and functionality, in the sense
of per flow service, is yet to be found. While in the
beginning highly complex system with great
functionality, such as Integrated Services, were
proposed, the recent trend seems to been going towards
less complex system and accepting lower functionality,
such as Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN). This
implies that deterministic services, which have so far
been predominantly researched, are not essential. In
this talk a case for statistical Quality of Service as
a new playing turf to find the trade-off is made and
several points, where Quality of Service meets
probability theory, are discussed.
