Welcome to this month's SCS Simulation News. This electronic
newsletter is published monthly and sent to your email address.
Our purpose is to keep SCS members and others in the modeling and
simulation communities up to date on the activities of the Society for
Modeling and Simulation International. Please forward this newsletter
to friends, peers and colleagues with interests in modeling and
simulation.
Please send comments and suggestions to the newsletter editor,

1. News and developments in modeling and simulation
* Some timely comments from John McLeod:
IF ONLY IT WERE A SIMULATION ...
I wonder how many readers of SIMULATION have noticed that for years,
under that title on the cover of the journal, have been the words
"for Understanding".
Since publication of LIMITS TO GROWTH in 1972, a few of us in
SCS, and others, have tried to promote "Peace Gaming" as a means of
understanding, among other things, the relationships of "have" to
"have-not" peoples. But we were unable to muster the interest or
the means for such an undertaking.
Now I do not mean to imply that, had we been successful, we could
have prevented, or even predicted, the recent terrorist attacks.
But I do believe that we could have understood the tensions that
led to the attacks, and now be better prepared for the future.
John McLeod, P.E.
* Dr. Robert P. Judd was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by
the Society for Modeling and Simulation. The award recognized Dr.
Judd's significant contributions to SCS over a period of more than
ten years. He has held numerous offices in the Society, including
Vice-President for Publications. Congratulations, Bob!

Technologies: A Tapestry of Systems and AI-Based Theories and
Methodologies," edited by H. S. Sarjoughian and F. E. Cellier,
published by Springer-Verlag.

* The 2001 Huntsville Simulation Conference will be held on October 3-4,
2001, in Huntsville, Alabama. Invited speakers will include Dr.
Richard Fujimoto of Georgia Tech and Dr. Richard Amos of the U.S.
Army Aviation and Missile Command. U.S. Professional Engineers
are able to earn Continuing Education Units for attendance.

* The 2002 American Control Conference will be held at the William A.
Egan Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage, Alaska, USA, on
May 8-10, 2002. The ACC is an annual, 3-day event, presenting
about 800 papers, with over 1200 participants. This premier
conference focuses on advances in the theory and practice
associated with automatic control.
