1. News and developments in modeling and simulation
* Professor Walter J. Karplus, interim dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli
School of Engineering and Applied Science, died Sunday, November 11
after an extended battle with cancer, at the age of 74.
He made many contributions to UCLA during his more than 40 years of
distinguished service, including acting as chair of the Computer
Science Department from 1972 to 1979. He was head of the Computer
Simulation Laboratory and served for many years as director of the
Center for Experimental Computer Science at UCLA.
Professor Karplus successfully employed virtual reality to allow
doctors to observe how blood flows through aneurysms deep inside
the human brain. He also used virtual audio to sort out critical
information from the cacophony of voices in NASA's mission control
room.
He is survived by his wife and two children. The family asks that
donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
* From Axel Lehmann, Chair of the SCS Nominating Committee:
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR SCS ELECTIONS 2002
Dear SCS Members,
Since 1994, as most of you already know, elections for officers of
The
Society and for Directors by membership are held on a biennial basis
in accordance with the terms of office specified in The Society's
bylaws.
In accordance with its strategic planning and following a
recommendation
of the Executive Committee in July this year during its annual
meeting, the
Board of Directors passed a bylaws change:
Starting in July 2002 with the new Board, each Member Council-the
Geographical, Technical and Autonomous ones-will be represented by
one
elected member on the Board of Directors.
Accordingly, at the next elections in spring 2002, each SCS member
has a
vote on positions including:
* President
* Senior Vice President
* Geographical Member Council (GMC)
* up to 2 Technical Member Councils (TMC)
* up to 6 Directors-at-Large
It is extremely important for The Society's members to vote for their
representatives and leadership for the next two-year period in April
next year.
It is just as important for the members to help the Nominating
Committee
and the Member Councils in the selection of a list of active and
quality
candidates. Therefore, membership can respond by submitting the names
of
candidates for the election positions mentioned above. As you select
your
candidates for nomination, in addition to thinking about the
individual's
reputation and professional or technical background, also think about
the
candidate's contribution to a Member Council or to The Society. For
your
convenience and for clarification, you will find a complete list of
all MCs
including their geographical area or their professional/technical
area,
respectively, on the SCS Website, using the link below.
After you make your selection of candidates for nomination, fill out
a
nomination form (also on the SCS Website), for each candidate. The
candidate
can help provide the information needed. The nomination forms must be
returned to the SCS office in San Diego before December 31, 2001.
Nominations for the Geographical MC's will be copied and also
forwarded by
the San Diego office to the Council chair.
The Nominating Committee will attempt to assess the qualifications
and the
experience of the nominees as completely as possible, and to
recommend the
best available candidates for The Society's leadership team.
Information on the slates of candidates recommended by the Nominating
Committee may be obtained from the SCS office following the
Nominating
Committee meeting at the 2002 WMC (January 27-31 in San Antonio,
Texas).
Anyone who was nominated but has not been added to the Final List of
Nominations will be informed by the Nominating Committee no later
than
January 31, 2002.
A candidate can be added to the Nominating Committee's slate of
candidates
if s/he receives valid signatures of 2% of the total SCS membership
(via letter
or fax), and returns the petition, along with a completed nomination
form, to
the Nominating Committee (in care of the SCS Office in San Diego) by
the
end of February 2002. The election, via mail ballot by all the
membership for
all vacant positions in addition to the election of Regional Council
Chairman,
will be held in April 2002.
The nomination form can be found on the SCS Website at
http://www.scs.org/election/membercouncils.html
Axel Lehmann, Chairman, SCS Nominating Committee
* From Lou Birta, Senior Vice-President, SCS:
To all SCS Members,
Most of the changes currently underway within the Society have been
widely
reported (see for example, the letter from the Executive Director
which
appears in the current issue of Modeling and Simulation Magazine).
Included here are changes to membership fees and services as well as
changes to SCS publications (together with enhanced web-based
services).
There is however, one important change that has remained somewhat out
of
the limelight. It relates to the Society's structure and governance.
Several years ago, it was acknowledged by the Society's leadership
that significantly more focus needed to be given to the wide ranging
technical interests of the SCS membership. This gave birth to the
concept
of Technical Councils with which individual SCS members could
associate
according to their technical interests. Six such Councils have been
created; namely, Theory and Methodology, Tools and Technology,
Education,
Training and the Profession, Applications in Science and Engineering,
Applications in Social Sciences and the Humanities, and Applications
in
Management, Planning and Forecasting. Each Technical Council, in
turn,
encompasses a variety of more specific technical areas.
During the Board of Directors meeting held last July in Orlando,
the Technical Council concept was further strengthened with
recognition of
the need to provide the Technical Councils with Board
representation. A
Motion was passed to provide each member Council (both Technical and
Geographic) with one representative on the Board of Directors. In
other
words, both the six newly created Technical Councils and the six
existing
Geographic Councils will now each have one Board representative.
With
this approach, the size of the Board of Directors remains unchanged.
With this change in its structure and governance, the Society will
be able to more comprehensively support the technical interests of
its
membership. In addition, the change will ensure that the Society's
evolution remains tightly connected to the ever-changing technologies
which it both serves and depends upon.
This change will, naturally, have an impact on the forthcoming
biannual elections of the Society's leadership which will take place
in
April 2002. Preliminary notices of this election are currently being
circulated. All SCS members are strongly urged to participate fully
in
this important event to ensure the Society's continued well-being.
Yours sincerely,
Lou Birta,
Senior Vice President, SCS
* The nomination period for the 2001 Department of Defense Modeling
and Simulation (M&S) Awards will close on Dec. 7. Awards will be
presented during the 11th annual Executive Forum on M&S in June,
2002.
