2) Reports on ESS'2001 and GAME-ON 2001
ESS'2001, which was held in Marseille in October of this year was
the biggest ESS conference we have had up till now despite
the fact that our friends from outside Europe were unable to
participate. With this I wish to thank the programme committee
in pulling this of and bringing 178 participants together.

4) New publications on Simulation
Two new publications on simulation have been brought to my attention.
a) System Performance Evaluation; Methodologies and Applications
CRC Press; (www.crcpress.com)
ISBN: 0-8493-2357-6
Edited by Erol Gelenbe
This book with its particular emphasison network performance for
wireless networks, the Internet and ATM Networking, becomes the
ideal
vehicle for professionals in computer architecture, networking,
and
software engineering to stay up-to-date and proficient in this
essentiel aspect of information technology, covers five major
topics
Advances in Internet Network Performance, Advances in ATM
Networks,
Traffic-Based System and Network Design, Advances in System
Performance
Methodologies and finally System Performance and Reliability.
b) Probability and Statistics with Reliability, Queuing, and Computer
Science Applications (The Blue Book)
Author: Kishor S. Trivedi
The revised 2nd edition is available now. It is published by John
Wiley
& Sons. ISBN number 0-471-33341-7
In the second edition, all the chapters have been thoroughly
revised.
Many examples and problems are updated, and many new ones have
been added. There is a considerable addition of examples on system
availability modeling, wireless system performance and software
reliability modeling, and system performability modeling. New
material on fault trees and stochastic Petri nets, and numerical
solution techniques for Markov chains have been added. Detection
of
software aging is included as well as statistical estimation of
availability is added.
A section on the computation of response time distribution for
Markovian
queuing networks has also been added. Chapter 8, on
continuous-time
Markov chains, has undergone the most change. Research experience
and
the application of these methods for last 25 years have been
distilled
in these chapters as much as possible.
The book will be of use as a classroom textbook as well as of use
for
practicing engineers. Researchers will also find valuable material
here.
5) New SCS Publications
The following New SCS Publications will be available for sale in
the next couple of weeks: ESS'2001 and GAMEON'2001 Conference
Proceedings.
The publication pages under www.scs-europe.org have been updated, but
not
yet finalised. They will be completely revamped in January.
6) Seeking reviewers for a colleague
Dear Philippe,
I submitted a paper in modeling of the synchronous machine to a
certain journal. The editorial board at that journal has some
difficulties
in finding appropriate referees. Could you, kindly, send to me up to
three
referees' names in the following form?
1. Name Position Affiliation E-mail address
2. Name Position Affiliation E-mail address
3. Name Position Affiliation E-mail address
Dr. Saleh Al-Jufout
Head of Electrical Engineering Department,
Tafila Applied University College,
Al-Balqa' Applied University.

So if you can help Saleh out, just send him an email.
7) Research Funding
DEFENSE BILL FACILITATES GOV'T SUPPORT OF STANDARDS ACTIVITIES
On Dec. 13, US Congress cleared a $343 billion Department of Defense
Authorization bill (S.1438) for Presidential signature, which
includes a
provision championed by the American National Standards Institute and
other standards organizations that facilitates participation by
federal
employees in standards development activities. The provision amends a
1912 law that prohibits government agencies from using appropriated
funds to reimburse association dues or expenses related to an
individual
attendance at society/association meetings or conventions. Under the
new
law, an exception is recognized for federal employees participating
in
agency-related standards activities.

8) MOSIM 2001 Proceedings are online in electronic format
Alexandre Dolgui informed me that the Web site of the MOSIM'01
conference has been updated.
http://www.utt.fr/mosim01
Now, you will find on the site:
1. papers in their full version, you can download them (see the
page "Programs")
2. a new information on the selection of papers for 8 International
Journals (IJPR, EJOR, IJCIM, JESA, RSD, SIMPRA, French Journal
of the Industrial Management, International Journal of the
Mechanical
System Engineering)
3. the complete list of participants

11) New Conference Locations sought
SCS Europe has for the moment conference sites for its
simulation and other conferences till 2002. If you want your
university to be the conference site for any future conference
and in which you, yourself would like to be involved in some
way, just let us know. You can contact me:
Philippe.Geril@rug.ac.be, and we'll take it from there.
12) Advertise your company or product on our website
Just provide us with your banner or logo and we'll link you to
more then 10000 dedicated visitors/year , active in the fields
of computer simulation, concurrent engineering and multimedia
per year. And this for a nominal cost of 100 EURO/month
13) SCS needs you!
As you saw in the printed Conference Booklet of SCS-Europe
a number of new themes are going to be hosted at ESM and ESS.
If you feel you could lead a track or session on these new
"exotic" themes, or if you have a theme which has as yet not been
addressed, send me an email on: philippe.geril@rug.ac.be
Well that's it folks!
Please feel free to forward this newsletter to your colleagues.
