1. Historical Item of the month (courtesy of Carl Malstrom)

On January 7, 1953 the National Bureau of Standards' Corona
Laboratory (in California) held a special Symposium on Analog
Computation, which was attended by John and Suzette McLeod and
reported on in the Third issue of the Simulation Council Newsletter,
dated January 1953. At the meeting, there were several technical
topics presented, discussed and interestingly captured by John in the
newsletter. He also commented about being late for the meeting as a
result of having to get across Los Angeles in the morning traffic.
He admits to a tactical error in selecting the departure time but,
I wonder how that trip from Camarillo to Corona during morning rush
hours would compare to today? A particularly insightful comment was
made by John in a footnote when reporting on a presentation about
Comparative Evaluation of Function Generator Methods made by Don
Leggett.
Don commented on the competition he was seeing in his lab between
analog
and digital computing techniques, to which John commented: "It is my
personal opinion that, because both analog and digital techniques
have
particular advantages, the ideal simulation equipment can evolve only
with cooperation of the two schools of thought." This illustrates
the
remarkable JMV (John McLeod Vision) of what was coming in simulation.
I would remind you that this was 1953, and at least 12 years before
we
had operational hybrid computer systems in the major simulation
   facilities around the country.

If you would like to peruse these early Simulation Council
Newsletters
for yourself, they are available (temporarily) in my web space at
   http://www4.ncsu.edu/~cwm/sc-newsletters/ . These will eventually
become
a part of the Society archive on the SCS web site. These newsletters
span a time frame from November 1952 to December 1963, at which time
the
McLeods and the Society transitioned the newsletters to a
full-fledged
monthly technical journal called Simulation. I have scanned all
these
newsletters and placed them in PDF files, one for each monthly
edition,
which you can access at the above URL.

This archive of newsletters will also be included on the CD of
electronic proceedings distributed at the upcoming 2002 Summer
Computer Simulation Conference, July 14-18 at the US Grant Hotel in
San Diego. This is to be our premiere golden anniversary event with
exhibits and special functions to recall and celebrate our Society's
50 year history, and to look forward to future developments in
simulation. Please come and join the celebration.

To help with the celebration, the 50th Anniversary planning committee
needs any pictures you may have of SCS people and events in the
1950s,
1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. If you have these to share, please
send hard copy or electronic versions (in JPG format) to Steve Branch
(sbranch@scs.org) at the SCS office. Sorry, but hard copy pictures
   cannot be returned.

2. News and developments in modeling and simulation

* Attention SCS Members:
If you have not already done so, please fill out your 2002 SCS
Board of Dierectors ballot and return to SCS this week. Please
note that election ballots need to be postmarked on or before May
31, 2002 in order to be qualified and included in the 2002
   election results.

* The 2002 Summer Computer Simulation Conference (SCSC'02)
   July 14 - 18, 2002
   San Diego, California

Sponsored by The Society for Modeling and Simulation International
(SCS)
   - Celebrating our 50th year as the pre-eminent professional
organization
dedicated to promoting the application and development of
computer-based
   modeling and simulation.

Come and participate in the excitement surrounding the celebration of
SCS's Fiftieth Anniversary (1952-2002). Share in the maturation of
the
modeling and simulation profession, industry, and marketplace as we
go
forward into the second half-century of the Society's existence. The
2002 Summer Computer Simulation Conference will address the past,
present, and future of modeling and simulation with a wide-ranging
technical program that will capture and stimulate the imagination as
we
   celebrate this milestone.

The Preliminary Program for the 2002 Summer Computer Simulation
Conference,
including special events celebrating the 50th anniversary celebration
of SCS,
   is now posted online at:
