1. Historical Item of the month (courtesy of Mitch Sisle and Carl Malstrom)
This month we will report on the current history of the 50th Anniversary
celebration events that took place at the 2002 SCSC/SPECTS Conference in
San Diego, July 14-17. Present at this event were many of the Old Timers,
including our founder and his wife John and Suzette McLeod, who helped
make the history that is normally reported in this section.
The Sunday afternoon event was a gathering of Old (and not so old) Timers
to listen to historical presentations by several SCS pioneers, and to share
stories of the old times in simulation. The program consisted of opening
remarks by Mitch Sisle, 50th Anniversary Chairman and President Bruce
Fairchild. George Marr served as the emcee for the rest of the program.
Bob Howe presented an overview history of simulation, Roy Crosbie talked
about the history of SCS, and Eugene Kerckhoff talked about the history
of SCS in Europe. Several Old Timers were invited to tell us their early
SCS experiences. We then saw videos on the history of simulation as
presented by the History Channel on national TV, an astronaut interview
by John McLeod, and a personal story by John of his creating a simulation
that seemed to physically come to life. We concluded with a photo session
of the 11 Past Presidents and EAI Alumni in attendance.
The Conference Welcome Reception followed in the evening where an extensive
50th Anniversary exhibition was set up in conjunction with the vendor
exhibits. The SCS exhibition was arranged in three sections. The first
included several videos and DVDs covering the history of simulation and
conversations with John McLeod. The second section included two analog
computers, one an AD-1-16 from ADI and the other an EAI TR-20 from CalState
Chico, along with Gerry Baker?s collection of Analog Computer Logos. The
third section included photos and posters dealing with simulation from the
1950s to today. This included an extensive display of the analog simulation
facilities over the years at the NASA Flight Research Center, provided by
Gene Waltman of NASA; a Chronology of Electronic Analog Computers compiled
by Jerry Kennedy; and an extensive simulation timeline and numerous photos
from the Navy, supplied by Vince Amico. Also included was a memorial
listing of SCS members no longer with us.
At Monday?s opening plenary session, Axel Lehmann, Society Past President
and SCS invited speaker, gave a talk on Simulation: Past, Present, and
Future. The presentation covered models from the Middle Ages to today and
was a novel approach to the subject, which was very well received.
The 50th Anniversary Celebration concluded with a gala dinner on Tuesday
evening. In addition to good food and fellowship, there was a special
program, emceed by Ralph Huntsinger. The program included musical
entertainment, award presentations and comments from SCS members honoring
our distinguished guests John and Suzette McLeod. During the awards
portion, Bob Howe announced the formation of the Modeling and Simulation
Hall of Fame established as a mechanism for the industry to recognize
seminal contributions to the M&S field. He then went on to bestow the
honor of being the "first inductee" on John McLeod. Next, Carl Malstrom
presented the SCS Presidential Award for Service to the Society to Roy
Crosbie. This is the Society?s highest award for service and has only
been awarded one other time. Finally, in further honor of the occasion,
Professor Augustino Bruzzone, representing the Liophant Society in Italy,
presented ceremonial Liophant Plates to SCS (accepted by Bruce Fairchild)
and to John and Suzette McLeod.
Everyone had a great time at these events and vowed to return for the
100th. Pictures from the celebration should be on the Society?s web
archive in the near future.

2. News and developments in modeling and simulation
* Carl Malstrom has compiled an electronic archive of early Simulation
Council Newsletters. It is available at
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~cwm/sc-newsletters/ . These
newsletters span a time frame from November 1952 to December 1963,
at which time the McLeods and the Society made the transition
to a full-fledged monthly technical journal called "Simulation."
* The Huntsville Simulation Conference will feature the following
speakers: Keynote speaker Mr. Laurence Burger, U.S. Army Space and
Missile Defense Command; Luncheon Speaker Brigadier General John M.
Urias, U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command; and Luncheon
speaker Dr. William Killingsworth, University of Alabama at Huntsville.
Visit http://www.scs.org/hsc for more information.
* The Committee on Modeling and Simulation Enhancements for 21st
Century Manufacturing and Defense Acquisition, National Research
Council has published "Modeling and Simulation in Manufacturing and
Defense Acquisition: Pathways to Success." The committee calls for
radical changes in the way military systems are developed and
acquired. They assert that M&S must be consistently employed
throughout all phases of a system?s life-cycle. The full text
of the report can be found at
http://www.nap.edu/catalog/10425.html
* We are always seeking news to publish in this electronic newsletter.
If you have items or information that you would like to appear here,
please send them by electronic mail to
mailto:Newsletter.Editor@scs.org
Include a web address if possible; I'll include a link to your page.
