Welcome to this month's SCS Simulation News. This electronic
newsletter is published monthly and sent to your email address.
Our purpose is to keep SCS members and others in the modeling and
simulation communities up to date on the activities of the Society for
Modeling and Simulation International. Please forward this newsletter
to friends, peers and colleagues with interests in modeling and
simulation.
Please send comments and suggestions to the newsletter editor,

1. News and developments in modeling and simulation
* Carl Malstrom has compiled an electronic archive of early Simulation
Council Newsletters. It is available at
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~cwm/sc-newsletters/ . These
newsletters span a time frame from November 1952 to December 1963,
at which time the McLeods and the Society made the transition
to a full-fledged monthly technical journal called "Simulation."
* The HSC preliminary program can be found at http://www.scs.org/hsc
Conference registrations are now being accepted.
* Latest additon to the SCS online archive: The papers from the 2002
Grand Challenges in Modeling and Simulation workshop have been
uploaded to the SCS Publication archive at
http://scs.affinitycity.com <http://scs.affinitycity.com/>
* Has your SCS Membership expired? The new SCS membership application
is available online now at http://www.modelingandsimulation.org
<http://www.modelingandsimulation.org/>
* Is Simulation a Science? Guest author Scott Harmon discusses the
issues surrounding this debate in the latest issue of Modeling and
Simulation Magazine online at http://www.modelingandsimulation.org
<http://www.modelingandsimulation.org/>
* At the recent simSummit, held in San Diego in July 2002, representatives
of major M&S institutions decided that a Code of Professional Ethics
for M&S would be one of the four pillars (along with Science, Technology
and Applications) for M&S to be considered as a profession. For more
information see these papers from SCSC 2002 Proceedings:
Ören, T.I., Elzas, M.S., Smit, I., and L.G. Birta, "Code of
Professional Ethics for Simulationists," at
http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/pubs/D81_Code.pdf
and Ören, T., "Rationale for A Code of Professional Ethics for
Simulationists," at
http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~oren/pubs/D84_Rationale.pdf
Contact: Dr. Tuncer Ören at mailto:oren@site.uottawa.ca
* The Department of Defense-sponsored and -developed Runtime
Infrastructure (RTI), the software implementation of the DoD's
High Level Architecture (HLA), has begun its transition to a
solely commercially developed and sustained product.

* Two special issues on health sciences simulation, edited by Dr.
James G. Anderson, are being published this year. They are the
Special issue on Simulation, Health Care Management Science,
Vol. 5, No. 2, April 2002; and the Special issue on Simulation
in Medical Informatics, Journal of the American Medical
Informatics Association, Vol. 9, No. 5, September/October 2002.
Jim can be contacted at mailto:Andersonj@sri.soc.purdue.edu
* We are always seeking news to publish in this electronic newsletter.
If you have items or information that you would like to appear here,
please send them by electronic mail to
mailto:Newsletter.Editor@scs.org
Include a web address if possible; I'll include a link to your page.
