1. Historical Item of the month (courtesy of Carl Malstrom)

The May 28, 1953 Simulation Council meeting held at the Pomona plant of
the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft (Convair) Corporation was much
anticipated, due to the nature of the showcase simulation facility that
Dov Abramis and Stan Rogers had developed there. The large computers
were internally assembled from components from several different vendors,
tied together with equipment of their own design, with many innovations
for interconnectivity, setup, checkout and documentation. The Pomona
plant was a new facility built by Convair exclusively for missile
development and the simulation setup they had developed was allowing them
to operate in two shifts, changing problems twice a day. Whereas in the
San Diego facility a problem board could not even be removed for checking,
in Pomona they changed them twice a day. (Note: this was an amazing
accomplishment for the state of the technology available at the time.)

The subject of the meeting was "Unusual Applications and Unusual Techniques
of Simulation," and was very well attended. Eighty-one people representing
28 organizations were there. As McLeod reported in the Newsletter,
"that is too many!" He further explains, "We are honored to have sponsored
a meeting attended by so many of the best brains in the simulation field.
But in spite of interesting talks by good speakers it was the poorest
meeting to date in light of Simulation Council objectives. The free
exchange of ideas, the discussion and the banter which are usually the
essence of our meetings were almost completely stifled by the sheer size
of the gathering. To be heard, a person had to step up to the front of
the auditorium, in which case he felt that he was making a speech. That
did it!"

True to the subject of the meeting, there were unusual and interesting
simulations discussed. Among them were: a study of river basins for the
Weather Bureau, a study of nuclear induction or nuclear magnetic resonance
as published by Nobel laureates Stanford and Purcell, a study of the
propagation of low-frequency radio waves in the ionosphere, and the use
of weighting functions to obtain statistics from problems involving noise
without making a large number of runs. It is evident the analog computer
was a significant tool for addressing some of the most challenging
scientific
and engineering problems of the time.

To read more from the meeting about these unusual simulations and the new
Convair Analog Computer Laboratory, go to the May 1953 Newsletter online at

4. Publications

Appropriate technical contributions are welcome for the following
two publications of SCS. For more information, visit
http://www.scs.org/pubs/pubsinfo.html
********************************************************************
SIMULATION: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation
International is the monthly refereed transactions of the leading
society devoted to advancing the discipline and profession of
modeling and simulation. An archival journal in both print and
electronic form, it consists of distinct sections--one devoted
to theory, the other to applications. Published articles must have
a clear relevance to general modeling and simulation issues. In
addition to its archival mission, the journal aims to help
professionals and researchers, particularly those involved in
multidisciplinary projects, apply advances in modeling and simulation
theory, methodology, and technology to their application areas.

The methods and applications of modeling and simulation in both well
established and emerging areas include the fields of, but are not
restricted to:

* Computer Science: Computer networking and communications, high
performance computers, real-time systems, mobile and intelligent
agents, simulation software, and language design.
* Engineering: System engineering and design, aerospace, traffic
systems, air and surface traffic systems, microelectronics,
mechatronics, manufacturing systems, robotics, and air traffic.
* Physical and Life Sciences: Chemistry, physics, biology, medicine,
biomedicine, sociology, and cognition.

Manuscript submission is online. To submit a manuscript, go to:
http://simulation.manuscriptcentral.com/
********************************************************************
MODELING & SIMULATION Magazine is the general interest publication
of SCS. Contributions from all members of the modeling and simulation
community are welcome. Examples of topics include the following:
* Hardware/software releases: What does your new or latest product do?
How is it better? What doesn?t it do?
* Major research efforts and breakthroughs, both academic and industrial.
* Researchers? reports on progress in layperson?s terms.
* New requests for proposals, new projects/contracts/funding announcements.
* Progress in education/training; infusion of modeling and simulation
into general curriculum.

The two main goals of this publication are to present papers that are
readable to the non-expert and to provide useful information related to
the field of modeling and simulation.

Press releases and news about modeling and simulation can be suggested
for publication by sending material to Steve Branch at
mailto:sbranch@scs.org

Technical articles can be submitted for consideration by writing to the
SCS Managing Editor at mailto:Editor@scs.org
