1. News and developments in modeling and simulation

* The 2003 Advanced Simulation Technologies Conference (ASTC'03) will
be held March 30-April 4, 2003 at the HYATT Orlando in Kissimmee,
Florida. This meeting marks the first time in recent years that an
SCS International conference will co-locate (meeting at the same
conference facility, over the exact same days/times) with another
non-SCS event. The 2003 SISO Spring SIW will share the HYATT
conference center with ASTC'03, and the respective program
committees are working together to coordinate program features as
much as possible, to allow for attendees to get a taste of the
different aspect of our ever diversifying modeling and simulation
community. The ASTC'03 keynote speech will be open to SISO-SIW
attendees, as the SISO keynote speech will be open to ASTC'03
attendees. The groups will have a chance to network more informally
during coffee breaks and the reception in the shared exhibit area as
well. Those interested to attend or exhibit a this combined event
can register with either SCS or SISO, and registration information
is available at the respective websites, http://www.scs.org and
   http://www.sisostds.org

* The call for papers has been issued for the SCS 2003 Summer
Simulation MultiConference, to be held July 20-25 2003 in Montreal,
Canada. In 2003, the longest running annual SCS meeting takes a
slightly new name, and adds greater diversity to the conference by
offering three distinct technical programs as follows:

   1) The Summer Computer Simulation Conference (SCSC'03). See the call
      for papers at
      http://www.scs.org/confernc/ssimc/ssimc03/cfp/scsc03.htm

   2) The International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer
and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS'03). See the call for papers at
      http://www.scs.org/confernc/ssimc/ssimc03/cfp/spects03.htm

   3) The International Conference on Information Systems and
Engineering (ISE'03). See the call for papers at
      http://www.engr.udayton.edu/faculty/wsmari/ISE2003/

* Four special issues are planned for the SCS journal "Simulation:
Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation
International." These issues will focus upon these interest areas:
   --Component-Based Modeling and Simulation
   --Applications of the DEVS Formalism
--Grand Challenges for Modeling and Simulation
   --Simulation of Air Traffic
   For complete information, visit
   http://www.scs.org/pubs/specialIssues

* A call for papers has been issued for Agent-Based Simulation 4, to
be held April 28-30, 2003, in Montpellier, France. See the call at
   http://abs2003.cirad.fr/index_an.html

* A special issue of the journal "International Journal of Information
Technology and Decision Making," entitled "Telecommunications
Theories, Management, Development, Practices, and Applications in
Information Technology: Issues and Analysis," is to be published.
See the call for papers at
   http://www.worldscinet.com/ijitdm/mkt/callforpapers_telecom.shtml

* Carl Malstrom has compiled an electronic archive of early Simulation
Council Newsletters. It is available at
   http://www4.ncsu.edu/~cwm/sc-newsletters/. These newsletters span a
time frame from November 1952 to December 1963, at which time the
Society made the transition to a full-fledged monthly technical
   journal called "Simulation."

* Has your SCS Membership expired? Get your SCS membership status up-
to-date, or upgrade your membership to include subscription to one
of SCS's two periodicals. An electronic brochure detailing the new
service levels and related benefits of SCS membership is available
   online at http://www.scs.org/SCSMembershipFlyer.pdf

* We are always seeking news to publish in this electronic newsletter.
If you have items or information that you would like to appear here,
please send them by electronic mail to
   mailto:Newsletter.Editor@scs.org . Include a web address if
possible; I'll include a link to your page.

3. Publications

Appropriate technical contributions are welcome for the following two
publications of SCS. For more information, visit
http://www.scs.org/pubs/pubsinfo.html

********************************************************************
SIMULATION: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation
International is the monthly, refereed transactions of the leading
society devoted to advancing the discipline and profession of modeling
and simulation. An archival journal in both print and electronic form,
it consists of distinct sections--one devoted to theory, the other to
applications. Published articles must have a clear relevance to
general modeling and simulation issues. In addition to its archival
mission, the journal aims to help professionals and researchers,
particularly those involved in multidisciplinary projects, apply
advances in modeling and simulation theory, methodology, and
technology to their application areas.

The methods and applications of modeling and simulation in both well
established and emerging areas include the fields of, but are not
restricted to:

* Computer Science: Computer networking and communications, high
performance computers, real-time systems, mobile and intelligent
agents, simulation software, and language design.
* Engineering: System engineering and design, aerospace, traffic
systems, air and surface traffic systems, microelectronics,
mechatronics, manufacturing systems, robotics, and air traffic.
* Physical and Life Sciences: Chemistry, physics, biology, medicine,
   biomedicine, sociology, and cognition.

Manuscript submission for journal review is now online. To submit a
manuscript, go to:
http://simulation.manuscriptcentral.com/

********************************************************************
MODELING & SIMULATION Magazine is the general interest publication of
SCS. Contributions from all members of the modeling and simulation
community are welcome. Examples of topics include the following:

* Hardware/software releases: What does your new or latest product do?
How is it better? What doesn't it do?
* Major research efforts and breakthroughs, both academic and
   industrial.
* Researchers' reports on progress in layperson's terms.
* New requests for proposals, new projects/contracts/funding
   announcements.
* Progress in education/training; infusion of modeling and simulation
   into general curriculum.

The two main goals of this publication are to present papers that are
readable to the non-expert and to provide useful information related
to the field of modeling and simulation.

Press releases, event notices and news about modeling and simulation
activity can be suggested for publication by sending material to Steve
Branch at sbranch@scs.org

Technical articles can be submitted for consideration by writing to the
SCS Managing Editor at mailto:Editor@scs.org
