Computer Accounts for Senior Students

Postgraduate Accounts

Every senior COSC student (400-level and above) has separate computer accounts with both the CSSE and ICTS departments. These accounts must be used according to the CSSE Student Policies on computer use and all the references linked therein.

Accounts for postgraduate thesis students are closed one month after thesis acceptance, or upon withdrawal from the University. Accounts for PG.Dip.Sci. and Honours students are treated as undergraduate accounts for closure purposes, meaning that such accounts are closed in March of each year that the student is no longer enrolled in these courses.

Allowances

All postgraduate students receive a free Internet Allowance of 4 GB traffic per month from ICTS. Students can view this ICTS allowance as an 'Internet Allowance' when checking their Account Details in 'My IT Account' online: https://ras.canterbury.ac.nz/.

The default ICTS disk quota, i.e. how much disk space you have to store files on P: drive, for postgraduates has been increased to 3.0 GB. Students receive this allowance automatically once their enrolment is confirmed and their ICTS account is created. The CSSE disk quota for home directories (H: drive) of postgraduate students enrolled in COSC courses is generally 3.0 GB, but 5.0 GB for PhD students.

Printing on CSSE printers is charged at the same rates as printing to ICTS printers, but the department will make a one-off contribution to the cost of thesis printing for each thesis student. Contributions will be $30 for MSc and $60 for PhD students, via the supervisor making a TAS request for this allowance when the student starts writing their thesis.

Charges

Students are responsible for paying all charges incurred that exceed any CSSE departmental allowance. All computing charges are made to the student's ICTS account.

Photocopying is done in Erskine room 334 using your student ID card and is charged at the normal ICTS rates, which are handled within the department.

The CSSE department is charged for external people browsing the CSSE web site, so if a very popular page is created here we may ask the student to pay the charges, justify it, or remove it.

If you use chargeable resources sparingly (e.g. print "2-up" where possible), then these allowances will be sufficient for most of your needs. Students can also deposit additional money into their ICTS account with their Canterbury Card.

Senior students should consult their supervisor for assistance with expensive one-off items that others might benefit from, such as downloading a large piece of software, or producing a joint research paper or a departmental research report.

If students require access to a facility that they are normally not allowed to use they should ask the Chairman of the Facilities Committee. For tutoring work, students should get the lecturer or CSSE administrator to do any photocopying that is required, and use the appropriate tutor's account for printing.
